At the end of 2021 we held our annual Colleagues’ Choice Awards ceremony to celebrate our people. After a nomination process which say almost 200 peer to peer nominations, we announced a shortlist.

On the evening of the awards (which once again had to be virtual!), we crowned our seven winners and thanked them for their commitment in 2021.

Let’s hear more about each of our winners and from the winners themselves.

THe above and beyond award

At SBG, we take pride in being autonomous and adding value wherever we can. This category asked for nominations for people who really have gone above and beyond their role in 2021; whether that be by taking on additional responsibilities, motivating their team, giving back to other teams, mentoring or supporting projects.

Our winner: Charley Buller (People Support Executive)

Charley has created and driven the Environmental and Sustainability group and work at SBG in addition to her busy day job!

Charley’s passion for this area is evident and has influenced the business focus and helped us see all the great work we can do to positively impact our environment.

This additional work Charley has taken on has seen her presented to many different areas of the business including our Leadership Team.

Community champion of the year

Community means lots of things – so our Community Champion nominations were a range of colleagues who have created and maintained a sense of community for their team, someone who has been active within their community outside of SBG, or even completed an inspiring fundraiser!

Our winner: Molly Cassidy (Senior Commercial Marketing Executive)

Molly has been working with a charity called The Swan Song Project, who help to write songs for people who are facing end of life.

Molly has gone above and beyond when working with the Ben (the founder) to help increase exposure and engagement for the charity through various marketing adjustments. Molly has used her own marketing skills as well as pulling together a team of creative people to help give The Swan Song Project a much needed boost, which they otherwise couldn’t afford.

Molly’s work includes setting up an interview with Ben and a family he has helped, to capture usable content for their social channels, something which Ben has been very grateful for.

Inclusion Champion of the year

Inclusion is always high on our business agenda and we were keen to hear about the role models around the business who’ve been championing inclusion and inspiring teams.

Our winner: Clive Smart (Head of Talent Acquisition)

Clive is known for being an innovator in the People Team but in 2021 he executed his best and most meaningful idea yet.

Clive identified the external challenges post pandemic, young people were facing getting into employment, and brought the idea of the Kickstart scheme to SBG. Clive challenged our Leadership Team to self-fund the scheme as opposed to taking the government grant and made sure we removed any barriers to entry for the scheme as well as putting in place principals to make sure all the young people would have the best possible experience with SBG. As a result we’ve hired 13 brilliant young people with so much potential and value to add to SBG.

Outside of the scheme, Clive has driven a number of projects to drive inclusive hiring such as introducing masked profiles to disrupt bias in applications, banning asking candidates salary information to close pay gaps and looking at the accessibility of our careers site.

Mentor of the year

Sharing knowledge is part of our culture. We’re always looking to grow and develop ourselves, and we use our knowledge and passion to inspire and support our each other within our SBG community.

Our winner: Chris Hammond (Digital Learning Specialist)

Everyone that has ever had the opportunity to work with Chris will know how much of a pleasure it is to simply have a chat with him. Chris always supports colleagues with advice on best practise, how to tackle challenging situations, challenging people to try new things or just being an ear to vent to in a difficult time.

Chris inspired colleagues to mentor others where possible through being such a great mentor himself.

“Choosing to have ‘Know It, Share It’ as one of our core values was a wonderful decision and it is so important in breading a cooperative working lifestyle and a culture of sharing.

“It is an absolute joy working for Sky Betting & Gaming and I love that we are given the freedom to express ourselves, be creative and share our ideas, no matter how ‘out there’ they may be.” Chris Hammond, Digital Learning Specialist

Wellbeing Champion of the year

It’s been another turbulent year as we’ve been navigating our way through the world ‘opening up’ again. Throughout this, colleagues have stepped up to make sure the wellbeing of our people is always our priority. This award can recognise a colleague who’s always been there for a chat over coffee, helped shape our wellbeing offering or driving wellbeing in their team.

Our winner: David Learmont (Senior Copywriter)

David Learmont trained to be a Mental Health First Aider and SBG Wellbeing Champion in June 2021.

Since then alongside their role as a Senior Copywriter, Dave has been a leading the way as a standout Wellbeing Champion. As you can imagine he has a wonderful way with words and has been supporting on the writing the scripts for the wellbeing tools, volunteering for filming and always offering a helping hand. Dave and a colleague created a Wellbeing Wednesday email within their team to promote wellbeing tips and create a healthy environment. On top of this Dave has also to shared his personal story on International Men’s Day to help remove the stigma about mental health.
