I’m Kate and I’m a Golang Software Engineer in transactions in the Gaming Tribe at SBG. Our team are responsible for handling transactions from game sessions.

A couple of weeks ago a group of SBG colleagues met in York to take part in a day of volunteering for New Beginnings Horses which is a registered charity who re-train and re-home former racehorses.

This is one of SBG’s annual volunteering days which is open to all colleagues, and is a chance to step away from your desk and give your time to a local charity in need of help.

Why did I decided to take part

Over the past 18 months I have found it quite tough living and working from home. I moved to Leeds a few months before the pandemic and did not know anyone from Leeds, so I found myself feeling incredibly isolated.

When I was made aware of this volunteering opportunity, I signed up straight away as I knew it would be an opportunity to step away from my desk for the day and meet some new people whilst being in beautiful countryside and helping a local charity.

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE DAY

I was up bright and early at 7am to get picked up at 8:30am. I was looking forward to a day away from the desk and to get out into the countryside away from busy city life.

When we arrived, we were welcomed by the owners of the farm who gave us an introduction to what the charity does. We were then given the opportunity to brush one of the horses and learn how to approach the horses so not to scare them.

After this we were given the task to paint the stables in black paint. I found this incredibly therapeutic, and I enjoyed getting to know some new people from SBG who I would not ordinarily come across in the office due to working in different teams/tribes. We worked in teams to paint the farm. When painting up higher – m team may have ended up with black paint on them from my “aggressive painting style” but it was all part of the fun!

We had a group lunch which was lovely as this gave us all the opportunity to take a break and have some yummy snacks, some of which were provided by the owners of the farm.

We continued painting after lunch and managed to improve quite a few of the stables that were looking worn down.

We had some photos taken at the end of the day so we could remember the day. I got home very tired and covered in black paint, but I had a great day as it was rewarding to know I had helped a local charity and had made some new friends.
