We’re embarking on a partnership with Code First Girls (CFG), a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to transform tech by providing the skills, space and inspiration for women and non-binary people to become kick-ass developers, data whizzes and future leaders.
The group find and support female tech talent across a combination of university students, career switchers, career breakers and teach them to code – for free!
Code First Girls are supporting people from underrepresented backgrounds to help set them up for success:
- Over 55% of students are from underrepresented ethnicities
- 27% are/were eligible for free school meals
- 26% identify as neurodiverse
We’re funding 180 class places so women can learn to code over a number of eight week evening classes. These classes are targeted at complete beginners and provides the fundamental grounding in either web development, data or Python.
And that’s not all, we’re also funding 10 women to complete the Code First Girls degree. This course runs for 13 weeks and includes:
- Six weeks foundation
- Six weeks specialisation in either Data, Full Stack or Software
- One reading week
Once the students have finished the course, we have the option to recruit a selection to work for us.
Both of these courses are made possible by companies like ourselves sponsoring them so women have these opportunities at no cost to themselves, helping to break down societal barriers into a career in tech.
And, after completing the courses, students have the skills they need to apply for tech roles, helping to shift the dial on what has historically been a male-dominated industry.
We’re really excited about our partnership and supporting more women and non-binary people to upskill in tech, and the possibility to bring some of these amazing students on-board at SBG.
